Blu-ray discs to become new global currency!

Things are looking rosy for supporters of the Blu-ray format, with numbers by the the Digital Entertainmant Group (DEG) showing that the relatively new media format is thriving in a global recession.

While digital media revenues were down overall over the first six months, the rental industry saw gains – largely due in part to growth in the Blu-ray market. A closer look at the numbers paint a pretty picture for the Blu-ray Disc Association, with Blu-ray sales up 91% to the tune of $407 million. Over 20 million Blu-ray discs shipped this year, which is over twice as many as last year. And to cap off this hat trick, player sales exceeded 2 million, over 25% from the prior year.

Adoption rates in the US are finally starting to exceed its UK counterpart (already experiencing a Blu-ray sales boom), with an estimated 11 million Blu-ray players in US households.

Bob Chapek, president of Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment and chairman of the DEG, looked at the numbers and sounded an optimistic note.

“The overwhelming satisfaction expressed by consumers with regard to Blu-ray shows great promise to the industry’s economic future and we are also optimistic regarding their appetite toward digital technologies,” Chapek said.
