3D capable HDTVs were spotted in the wild at this year’s CES, but Sony is pushing ahead with the production of 3D Blu-ray discs and players to complement the 3D craze.

CNET confirmed the speculation at a Sony briefing in Sydney, where Yoshinami Takahasi (senior exec of Sony’s home entertainment arm) touted the new technology. Takahasi confirmed that 3D Blu-ray discs and players would be made available to consumers by fall of next year, if everything stays on schedule.

Film studios still have to reach an agreement on a format, expected before the end of year, before Sony can crank up production. If Hollywood settles on the format currently being discussed, it would jive with Sony’s goal to have 3D Blu-ray players available for adoption sometime next year.

The industry, anxious to put its growing catalog of stereoscopic 3D titles in the homes of A/V enthusiasts, is likely to support the current format up for discussion – an offshoot of the RealD stereoscopic process that utilizes polarized glasses. The downside is that anything approved by the BDA will require a 3D-capable HDTV in addition to a brand new Blu-ray 3D player.

There are no concrete plans for the format, outside speculation of animated films, documentaries and other short films due to technology constraints. That said, Sony is looking to create a comprehensive 3D viewing experiencing by leveraging its Blu-ray brand, so full-length 3D Blu-ray movies may be on the horizon.
