7. TRICK ‘R TREAT
RELEASE DATE – US: October 6th | UK: October 26th

Really, do you think we could have a Trick or Treat themed list without including Michael Dougherty’s beleaguered horror film?

It practically sold itself!

Described as an ambitious throwback to genre gems like Creepshow and Tales from the Crypt, Dougherty’s Trick r’ Treat never found an audience. Unsure of what to do with the picture, Warner Bros. shelved the project for almost three years, only dusting it off every now and then for a rare festival screening.

But right in time for Halloween, genre fans will be able to see if it was worth the wait.

In addition to a 1080p transfer, Dougherty is promising a production documentary, deleted scenes, outtakes and several audio commentaries.

Considering the positive buzz the film has generated with its limited screenings, Trick ‘r Treat could prove to be the surprise home video hit of the season. And a definite contender for best Halloween flick of the month.

6. SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER & UNCUT
RELEASE DATE – US: October 13th | UK: N/A

The Oscar-nominated, award-winning animated motion pictures finally hits Blu-ray, ten years after its controversial bow in theaters.

Not much can be said about animated classic, arguably South Park at its creative peak, that hasn’t been said by more prestigious critics. It’s just that good.

Paramount is commemorating the film’s ten year anniversary with a completely remastered 1080p transfer, Dolby TrueHD 5.1 lossless audio track, and a full length commentary with the film’s creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Renown for their colorful commentaries, and Paramount’s resistance to let them record any, this should provide the biggest draw for fans.

… but will the duo top their drunken audio commentary for Cannibal: The Musical!, complete with slurred speech and incoherent ramblings?

Only time will tell.

5. BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: THE PLAN
RELEASE DATE – US: October 27th | UK: N/A

The show might be over, but Battlestar Galactica series showrunner Ronald D. Moore isn’t done throwing fans for a loop just yet.

Directed by series star Edward James Olmos, “The Plan” will actually focus on the opposite side of humanity’s struggle for survival, depicting two Cylon models’ branching strategies to annihilate the human race. And although you won’t be able to catch it on television for another year, Universal is releasing the film on home video this month.

The Blu-ray will feature a 1080p, VC-1 encoded transfer accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby DTS-HD Master Audio track. Universal is also promising an unrated and uncensored cut of the anticipated film, in addition to BD Live support as well.

A pleasant swan song for one of television’s greatest series.
