Blu-ray 3D technology revealed!

Sony's technology will be similar to the Nvidia 3D Vision solution.
While development of 3D technology for Blu-ray has been no secret, Sony chief executive, Howard Stringer, is poised to let the cat out of the bag at the IFA technology fair in Berlin this week.
According to The Financial Times, Stringer will announce 3D-compatible Bravia sets, Vaio laptops, PS3 consoles and Blu-ray disc players available for purchase by the end of next year.
The global launch corresponds with the production of Panasonic’s 3D HDTV solution and British Sky Broadcasting’s plans to introduce a 3D channel in the UK sometime next year.
The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) was last seen trying to adopt a uniform model of delivery across all platforms, and has yet to issue a press release on an agreement, but with Sony and Panasonic rolling out similar technologies, the point is all but moot.
Sony will be employing “active shutter” 3D technology, similar to the Nvidia 3D Vision platform that debuted earlier this year, and the Panasonic solution that has been making the rounds since CES.
Active shutter differs from the polarized or anaglyph glasses commonly used in theaters, because active shutter visors actually contain tiny shutters inside the spectacles that open and close rapidly. When synced with a monitor that outputs the correct signal, the result is a 3D image.
Like Panasonic, Sony plans to create a total 3D solution across all brands, and utilize the growing catalog of digital 3D films to spur home video sales. There has been no discussion on the MSRP for any devices, but if its any indication, the Nvidia 3D Vision glasses currently put gamers back about $200 per pair. Expect the HDTV sets compatible with the technology to cost infinitely more.
The good news for those who don’t have a few thousand dollars to spend, is that backwards compatibility – with all existing hardware – is a requirement of any BDA deal.
So even if that hot, new release is billed as 3D compatible, you’ll still be able to view it only your good, ‘ole trusty 1080p HDTV.
We are all just 2D men living in a 3D world.
