Disney announced the “Diamond Collection” at its D23 Expo yesterday, a definitive collection of its impressive catalog of classic animated titles for Blu-ray.

The initiative will kick off on October 6th, starting with the newly restored Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and will extend the same high-quality remastering and enhanced Blu-ray technology to 13 other Disney classics (ranging from Sleeping Beauty to The Lion King) over the course of six years.

“Walt Disney’s gift of telling captivating and engaging stories was matched only by his passion for presenting them in the most spectacular way,” commented The Walt Disney Studios Chairman Dick Cook. “We are proud to continue his pursuit of excellence with ‘The Diamond Collection,’ which brings the films that are the foundation of our Company to audiences of all ages across the globe.”

Disney announced that Beauty and the Beast and Fantasia would be the next “Diamond Collection” releases after Snow White, dropping sometime in 2010.

Each title is to be digitally enhanced and restored from its original negatives, in addition to featuring full Dolby Digital 7.1 surround sound support.

The Mouse House plans on branding its bonus material and giving viewers unparalleled access to each film with a wealth of intricate production information. BD Live will also play an important role, starting with Disney’s “Family Play” feature, an open ended platform for trivia and interactive games.

Future “Diamond Collection” releases, which include Fantasia 2000, The Lion King, Bambi, Cinderella, Lady and the Tramp, The Little Mermaid, Peter Pan, The Jungle Book, 101 Dalmatians and Sleeping Beauty, were announced with no further information.

It is expected as the program progresses, Disney will unveil full specs and release information for each title.
