Sharp developing new Blu-ray laser
Next up, sharks with Blu-ray lasers on their friggin' heads!
Last weekend, Sharp revealed a powerful blue-violet laser that the company hopes will lead to triple and quad layered Blu-ray discs.
For tech heads, Sharp has achieved this technology by constructing a 500mW laser with an aluminum oxynitride layer between the laser’s crystal and the dielectric film that protects the laser. Previous lasers have lacked the crystalline dielectric film necessary to pull off the feat.
What does this mean for the layman?
Sharp’s breakthrough in Blu-ray technology could not only lead to quad-layered discs (with up to 100GB in total storage capacity), but 8x write speed as well.
After Sharp unveiled the laser at the Autumn Meeting of the Japan Society of Applied Physics, the company confirmed that it had rigorously tested the new laser and verified its reliability after thousands of hours under intense heat.
The company also announced it was capable of mass producing the technology, but was waiting for the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) to determine the specifications for triple or quad-layered Blu-ray discs.
The possibility of burning an entire digital music library on one disc has us salivating, though.

Right now Sharp can’t get the Blu Ray Software release that will allow Avatar/ Blu Ray version to play on their BDHD16, BDHD17U or BDHD22U machines correctly. Here it is April 26th,2010 & they have know since January this movie would be released to DVD /Blu Ray this year
Yet the 2 Year old Sony Blu Ray with a software update from last year will play Avatar correctly & no problems on Day 1 of the release.
Sharp needs to keep their customers happy or there will be NO REPEAT buyers of Sharp products..
