Is John Landis’ horror/comedy classic anything to howl about?

Few films are as haunting and unforgettable as John Landis’ An American Werewolf in London, a motion picture so memorable that the Academy had to create a new awards category just so Rick Baker could be properly acknowledged for his groundbreaking work in makeup and design.

Director John Landis singlehandedly defined the werewolf film for a new generation, an impressive feat considering that The Howling came out the same exact year.

One would have to look back to Lon Chaney’s depiction of The Wolfman in the classic 1941 Universal monster movie to find a more enduring image of the modern day lycanthrope.

Fittingly, it is Universal that has reissued Landis’ 1981 opus on Blu-ray, with a brand new transfer and a host of features. And while the release is not necessarily worthy of its ‘Full Moon Edition’ label, it certainly is no silver bullet to the prototypical horror/comedy classic.
