An American Werewolf in London Blu-ray Review
BIAS:
Forty years after The Wolfman, John Landis wrestled away the mantle and never let it go.
Shelved for over a decade, Landis wrote An American Werewolf in London in 1969 and hid the screenplay from the world – until he found success with Animal House and The Blues Brothers. It was only then that he was able to beg, borrow and steal a modest $10 million to shoot his dream project.
The black comedy is the most personal of Landis’ projects, and one that would propel the director to great heights throughout the 1980s, such as Michael Jackson’s Thriller and Trading Places. It was actually An American Werewolf in London that made the late King of Pop opt for Landis to helm what would become the greatest music video of all-time.
Landis would never again reach the zenith of horror (though he has attempted to resurrect his career in recent years), but for a brief moment, he stood alone.
In the early to mid-’80s, there was no one more inventive with the horror genre than Landis, whose legacy still thrives today.
His ability to seamlessly blend humor, romance and thrills throughout the film’s running time, has made An American Werewolf in London a permanent fixture in pop culture.
And it’s hard to imagine that changing anytime soon.
Verdict:
