Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Blu-ray Review

Why so serious?

Why so serious?

LIGHT: ★★★★☆
Irony is quite amusing to me. This section of the review is entitled Light, yet it is the lack of light that slightly tarnishes yet another great Harry Potter Blu-ray transfer.

While not as polished as Order of the Phoenix, unexperienced Blu-ray viewers will find no problem with the transfer in Half-Blood Prince. There is some slight film grain in some of the darker scenes in the film. The problem is, the entire film is very dark in hue and contrast for the most part. It is only slightly grainy, however, and it doesn’t tarnish the film’s cinematography at all.

Half-Blood Prince is still a stellar example of a good Blu-ray visual experience, just nothing to the degree of other 2009 Blu-ray releases Coraline or Up.

VIBRATION: ★★★★★
Half-Blood Prince sounds absolutely incredible.

The film sports at Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio track that excels in bringing out the bass as well as allowing an audience to hear key dialogue at a comfortable level.

A key scene where the sound truly excels occurs about halfway through the film where Harry’s classmate Katie Bell is possessed by a spell outside and is suspended in air in a frightening pose.

The film is complimented by a competent score penned by Nicholas Hooper, and it is beautifully brought out by the expert sound mixing as well. Definitely a must-hear on Blu-ray.

  6. I really enjoyed this movie. You are right, the cinematography was excellent & I appreciated the humour and teen angst. My teens, however, had more mixed feelings. They had a hard time getting past the fact that the movie wasn’t as good as the book.

Aside from Avatar, the last installment of Harry Potter will probably be the last of the big screen movies I will watch this year. Less than 3 months to wait!!!
