They don't make 'em like they used to.

Fred Dekker, while a capable director and savvy writer, has never been held in the same regard (and rightfully so) as genre contemporaries Sam Raimi and John Carpenter.

Yet, it’s mind boggling that his 1986 horror film, Night of the Creeps, has gone so unnoticed by the horror community at large for the past two decades. Nobody even batted an eyelash when James Gunn ripped off the story wholesale for his 2006 horror flick, Slither.

(Which, I’m sure, was out of love.)

Sadly, Night of the Creeps has languished on home video, noticeably absent from the market after a meager VHS release decades ago.

And while other cult filmmakers have found sizable audiences with the advent of DVD and the Internet, Fred Dekker has been waiting patiently for the day when someone would call his number.

Well, guess what Fred, today is your day – you’re up.

Finally rescued from obscurity by Sony, Dekker’s Night of the Creeps is a sly, over-the-top riff on ’50s era science-fiction, zombies and creepy crawlies, made all the more impressive by an outstanding performance from Tom Atkins.

And the Blu-ray doesn’t disappoint either, with an excellent transfer, proficient soundtrack and a solid set of supplemental material. It might have been decades in the making, but Dekker’s cult classic finally gets the home video release it so rightfully deserves.

Eclectic horror director Rob Zombie wants you to ring in the new year with a fully loaded Blu-ray release of his sequel to a remake of a classic.

(Try saying that three times fast.)

Halloween II, the second Zombie entry into the venerable slasher franchise, is set to hit US shelves on January 12th and UK shores sometime in February. After a successful re-release for Halloween, Sony has set its sights on making the title one of its marquee releases for Q1.

A direct sequel to Zombie’s remake of Halloween, Halloween II picks up one year later as Laurie Strode struggles with the psychological repricussions of the original film and cinema boogeyman, Michael Myers, ready to pick up where he left off.

Despite a more hostile reception from critics than his first stab at the franchise, Halloween II went on to become one of the highest grossing installments in the series.

And the Blu-ray is no barebones release – touting an audio commentary track featuring Zombie himself, deleted and alternate scenes, gag reel, casting footage, film specific material, MovieIQ and BD Live support.

More importantly, hopefully it indicates we’ll get a decent release of the 1981 sequel, Halloween 2, directed by Rick Rosenthal and written by John Carpenter.

Owners of Sony Blu-ray decks and Bravia HDTVs will be able to rent Sony Pictures’ animated film Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs a full month before the Blu-ray release on January 5th.

Starting December 8th, eligible Sony consumers will be able to rent the film in high-definition on networked Bravia HDTVs and Blu-ray players for $24.95 for a 24-hour rental. Anyone who purchases and registers a Bravia HDTV or Blu-ray player between now and January 4th will be receive one 24-hour rental of the film for free.

“Given our breadth of content and strength in networked products, Sony is the first company to utilize its internet enabled TVs and other networked devices to stream feature films directly to consumers’ televisions prior to availability on DVD or Blu-ray,” said Hiro Kawano, SVP for Sony Electronics’ home division business.

The two-disc Blu-ray set for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs hits retailers on January 5th in the US and February 15th in the UK.

As if Sony didn’t have to give geeks any more incentive to buy Neill Blomkamp’s science-fiction blockbuster, District 9, the company announced that it will be including a demo for its forthcoming PlayStation 3 game, God of War III, with the two-disc Blu-ray release.

PlayStation 3 owners will be able to unlock a making-of featurette upon completing the demo, viewable exclusively on PlayStation 3 hardware. It marks the first time that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and SCEA have teamed up for a Blu-ray release.

“We are thrilled to give consumers not only an incredible high definition presentation of District 9 and the wealth of bonus material about the movie,” said Lexine Wong, Senior Executive VP of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, “but also a taste of what is destined to be the biggest video game of 2010. This pairing of the movie and game demo is just another example of what is possible with the Blu-ray format.”

“Blu-ray functionality has long been a differentiator that separates the PS3 from other home entertainment systems,” continued Peter Dille, Senior VP of Marketing for SCEA, “Through this collaboration with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment we’re able to create a unique experience only available on the PS3 system that blends two of the most popular entertainment options available, watching District 9 and playing God of War III off the same disc.”

Perhaps the one thing Sony did right with the PSP Go.

Sony, yielding to customer complaints and critics about its awkward, convoluted transfer process for copying Blu-ray movies to its PSP handheld, plans to roll out a far more streamlined solution for owners starting in November.

No longer requiring a separate DVD, owners will be able to rip a digital copy straight from their Blu-ray disc and transfer it directly to the PSP from their PlayStation 3. The PSP digital copy cannot be played on a PC or or other portable media device.

The program will begin on November 10th, with the Sony Pictures release of Godzilla, and will extend to further, select Sony releases – including The Ugly Truth.

“Blu-ray is already known as the best way to watch movies at home, and now SPHE & SCEA are also making it the most convenient way to watch movies on the go,” said Rich Marty, Vice President of New Business Development at Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

Marty continued, “This latest enhancement to Blu-ray and Digital Copy demonstrates the versatility of the format and its ability to deliver a multi-platform video experience. It also showcases the unique advantage that the PlayStation 3 brings to the Blu-ray consumer.”

This is a pretty sweet feature for the Sony faithful, and one we hope more studios support as the format progresses.
